Joshua Goodman, associate professor of Education and Economics at Boston University, found an equally surprising effect at the university level. Goodman observed a student set of students whose SAT scores were right at the margin of a set point established for admission to what he called “target universities.” The candidates were essentially equivalent, with scores that differ in no more than 10 SAT points, a function that a student obtains only one more question, such a slight difference that could leave until chance; But on average, those just above the threshold obtained admission, and those who did not go below did not. Goodman discovered that the younger brothers of those who were admitted were significantly more likely to end up in an equally selective university than those whose older brothers lost only a few points. The younger brothers who ended up in selective conferences may have increased their expectations; They could see a way forward; They could benefit from what their older brothers did.
The experience of Michelle Obama at the University can be seen as a reflection of the findings of Goodman, he thought she requested decades before he undertook his research. Obama’s parents raised her in a working class neighborhood on the southern side of Chicago. His older brother, Craig, was a strong student, but the Ivy League schools were not on the radar of his parents. Craig, however, also had the benefit of being a star athlete, so he was recruited to play basketball at Princeton University. A study published in 2022 in Frontiers in Psychology, for example, complicated the often replicated finding that the oldest brothers are the most high -performance academics of their families. The oldest brothers of high -risk families and in families in which parents are not native English speakers do not obtain, in fact, higher in cognitive tests when they reach 2 or show more school preparation at age 4. In those families, they are not born not born because they benefit from the fluidity of their older brothers and their parents’ experience on the time to interact with pressures in pressures and schools and schools.
