On the occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day on Saturday, the Institute of Indian Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has announced that its students, researchers and faculty presented 417 patents duration of financial year 2024-25, 10 percent 3 percent in Cent4, A. This includes 298 Indian patents and 119 international patents. In addition, the Institute presented 39 designs, 6 copyright and 1 registered trademark, which carries the total IP fillings to 463 by 2024-25.
The institute also exceeded the vision ‘One patent a day’ by director Iit-M by director V Kamakoti.
In addition, in the last five years, Iit Madras has developed several technologies and transferred to industry partners such as new companies, MSME and MNC through license agreements of ₹ 28 million rupees. The largest was the 5G RAN subsystem technology transferred to Network Texas (Tata Group).
In addition, in the last five years, the Office of Technology Transfer (TTO) in IIT-Madras has also doubled the income from licenses and tripled the IP number with license. On average, the Tto generates ₹ 2.5 million rupees through agreements annually, with about one or two license agreements for months.
Duration 2024-2025, the TTO has successfully licensed more than 30 IP/patents with several companies such as Tunga Aerospace, OEG, Aspentech, Ciena, Rural-Mandi, Insitumicron, Greenvimes, Thryv and others. The TTO license has increased due to more PCT and stuffed with international patents.
“For India to be a technological superpower while we march towards viksit bharat @ 2047, protecting our intellectual properties is crucial. I am very proud, that the Iit Madras team has presented 417 patents in the financial year 2024-25, with a significant risk”, director, iit Madras, he said.
The patents presented are related to fields such as energy and battery innovations, microfluidic technologies, medical care applications and assistance, robotics and artificial intelligence. The Institute said that in 2024, a large number of inventions in electronics and communication, energy and environment, mechanics and automotive, robotics and others were filed.
The Industrial Consulting and Sponsored Research Office (ICSR) of IIT Madras coordinates the different aspects of the IP and the transfer of technology. It also has a dedicated legal cell. In addition, IPM Cell has worked closely with research groups, reviewing its inventions and prototypes, contributing to an increase in design fillings. An effort focused on the protection of copyright for the creative works of the researchers also led to a substantial number of copyright applications in the last financial year.
