Leather exports, footwear and leather products in the country increased by approximately 25 percent year-on-year to $ 5.7 billion in 2024-25 and the shipments are likely to cross the $ 6.5 billion brand this fiscal year.

The Leather Export Council (CLE) said that demands in developed and developing countries are “healthy.”

“In 2024-25, we have an export objective at $ 1 billion established by the Department of Commerce and carrying out this trend, our exports will cross $ 6.5 billion in 2025-26,” said the executive director of CLE, R Selvam.

He said the sector is registering growth despite global uncertainties.

Sharing similar points of view, the president of Cle, Rajendra Kumar Jalan, said that exports are doing good both in the United States and the United Kingdom, key export destinations for India.

Due to the 10 percent tariff walk, all exhibitions are giving discounts to buyers, but there are no orders, Jalan said.

“From April 14 to 15, the situation is normal. We have suggested the duty of ‘zero for zero’ to the government in the bilateral trade agreement with the United States,” he added.

Order books are good for the coming months and the great demand comes from the United States and the United Kingdom, he said.

They reported that the industry is intensive in labor, providing employment to about 42 LAKH of people. The sector has a total turnover of approximately $ 19 billion, which includes exports or $ 5 billion.

The sector has the potential to reach a total turnover of approximately $ 39 billion by 2030, which includes a national production of $ 25 billion and an export turnover of $ 13.7 billion, cordination to the industry.

The industry also declared that several Chinese investors are interested in Jin Hands with Indian footwear players to establish manufacturing units in India.
