This WNBA team is biggest opening weekend surprise (in a good way)

The majority projected that Washington’s mystics would be among the WNBA sausages, but he Salachicha – This season. The Mystics remained silent through free agency and changed one of their best players in Ariel Atkins. Then, the shipowner written, Georgia Amore, broke his ACL in the training camp.

But, through two games, the Mystics have been perhaps one of the most positive surprises of the League. They opened the season with a 4 -point victory against Atlanta’s dream, and followed him with a 5 -point victory over the Connecticut Sun.

Until now, the team has been led by Brittney Sykes, who fought against a series of injuries last season. Sykes support 24.5 points and 6 assists per game.

And, his two first -round rookie and Kiki Iriafen teams have been phenomenal. Citron, who was chosen from Notre Dame, supports 17 points in a ridiculous shooting of 64.7%, including 40% of three. Iriafen, who was chosen fifth, is supporting 15.5 points with 55% shots, in addition to 9 rebounds.

These smoke are something special

Kiki Iriafen: 17 pts, 14 Reb, 7-10 FG (Carrera High)
Sonia Citron: 15 pts, 3 AST, 2 STL, 5-10 FG

“I love playing with Sonia,” said Iriafen after the opening of the season. “She is so selfless and had 20 quiet points. The way she plays is so composed.”

The guard that returns Jade Melbourne has also been key; Melbourne has averaged 13 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, taking advantage of the increase in rear track opportunities.

All this has been done without two of the teams that promise young posts players, Aaliyah Edwards and Shakira Austin. Edwards lost the first two games of the season with a bruise on the lower back, while Austin lost a game with a right -legged injury and was expelled just a few minutes from another. When they return, the team’s margin will only increase, as well as their ability to handle the fiercest competition.

The competition that the mystics have faced have been relatively weak: the sun was also expected to be one of the lower feeders of the league, while the dream will probably be half the package. Now they embark on a three-game road trip that begins against the Valkyries of Golden State, which positions them well for an unlikely beginning of 3-0 considering the first fights of the Valkyries as the WNBA expansion team.

It is still very early, but Citron and Iriafen’s rookie duo has the Goths in a quick beginning. Sykes looks like an All-Star potential, and the mystics could show that many analysts are wrong that project that they were among the worst of the League.
