Color, 75, held by the Federal Police in the northeast city of Maceio, capital of the state of Aagoas, says the lawyer.

The former president of Brazil, Fernando Collor de Mello, was arrested after a Judge of the Supreme Court rejected his challenges against a previous conviction and ordered him to begin serving the jail.

The color lawyer, Marcelo Besta, said that the former leader was arrested at 4 am (07:00 GMT) on Friday while traveling to the capital of Brazil Brasilia, where he planned to surrender after the judge of the Alexandre de Moraes Supreme Court.

The 75 -year -old politician was arrested by the Federal Police in the city of the Northeast of Maceio, the capital of the state of Alagoas, said Besta in a statement.

The order of Moraes in Thorsday occurred after the Superior Court sentenced to necklace, the first president to win the popular vote after the end of the last military dictatorship of Brazil in 1985, eight years and 10 months in Prisanton in 2023 Charles.

Collor’s lawyer had already expressed “surprise and concern” for Moraes’ decision in an initial statement published Thursday night, but added that the former president would comply with the order.

The 2023 sentence occurred after Brazilian prosecutors accused the Colora of receiving around 30 million reais ($ 5.28 million) in bribes of a subsidiary of the state oil company Petrobras.

Color assumed the position of president in 1990, but did not end his term since Congress decided to accuse him two years later in the midst of a separate corruption scandal by which the Supreme Court acquitted him in 1994.

He was later chosen as a senator that represents the state of Aagoas.

He left Congress at the beginning of 2023 after an offer failed by the governor of Alagoas.

The color of Mello is not the first president of Brazil to conflict with the law.

Four of the seven presidents who have led the country since the 1964-1985 military dictatorship have been condemned, imprisoned or accused.

In the last case, the former president of the extreme right, Jair Bolsonaro, received the order to be tried for an alleged plot of blows after losing the 2022 elections.
